This Tutorial shows you how you can use Pivot Tables even if you only have one column of data. This is a very powerful technique for counting groups of data and may well save you hours.
The only other way to do this in Excel that I know of is by using an advanced filter and the COUNTIF statement. Both of these methods are covered in the tutorials linked below but this Pivot Table method is at least 10 times faster.
